PA Training launches part-time NCTJ diploma course
London 14th April 2015: Press Association Training, part of Press Association (PA), the UK’s leading multimedia news agency and digital content provider, has launched a part-time course of the NCTJ diploma in journalism.
This action-packed programme will be spread over 38 weeks and will involve trainee journalists committing to one evening a week and every Saturday for the duration of the course.
The course will encompass the complete portfolio of modules required to be awarded the NCTJ’s Gold Standard Diploma qualification. There will be exams in shorthand, news reporting, essential media law, and court reporting, public affairs and production journalism. Trainees will have to complete a portfolio of published work, with opportunities to work on real stories throughout the course.
The teaching will be led by PA Training tutors who are working journalists bringing the very latest knowledge and techniques from today’s digital newsrooms into the classroom.
Tony Johnston, Head of Press Association Training, said, “The course is in response to a growing demand to study journalism part-time whilst working. It is the same course syllabus as our traditional 17-week course, but now with greater flexibility to allow for other commitments. Before the course even opened – we received applications so we are expecting to see high demand.”
John Cary, NCTJ head of accreditation, said: “I am pleased that the Press Association in London, one of our established centres, has met the required standard to offer an accredited course for part-time students. I know that part-time courses attract people to study journalism from a wide variety of ages and backgrounds. Many of them show enormous dedication in completing their NCTJ diploma studies in the evenings and at weekends while also holding down full-time jobs. The diversity of talents which such students bring to journalism will in the long term benefit newsrooms in all parts of the industry.”
The accreditation report said: “The panel agreed that, in principle, this course would be a good addition to the programmes and allow for a more diverse range of applicants including those wishing for a career change.”
The course will begin on September 8th, 2015.
