We can provide a wide range of education projects for schools and colleges and we are happy to work with you to develop appropriate schemes of work.
In all cases, these can be mapped against existing course units and our education staff are experts in this field.
In recent months, we have worked on projects based around new Diplomas, level one and two projects in further education colleges and on programmes with GCSE and A Level students.
All our education experiences are based on three guiding principles:
- They are delivered in the workplace
- They are as close to the real world of the media as you can get
- They give a positive experience of the world of work
Examples of our work
No two programmes are exactly alike, but here are some examples of the types of programme we have run.
Hold the Front Page
Find our what it is like to work in the media, explore inside the offices of one of the UK's biggest news operations, meet the people who write the stories and learn what goes in to making a newspaper or magazine.
These days are ideal for schools and colleges that deliver a wide range of qualifications, including media, English, and IT and want to bring the learning of students to life in the real world.
During the day students have the chance to learn the basics of the software used to design magazine and newspaper pages and even have the chance to design a front page as well as make decisions about what makes news.
Newspaper project
A Press Association journalist attends the school to launch the programme and students then have six weeks to gather their news stories and pictures. Two days are then spent in the Press Association training centre producing an eight-page, full-colour tabloid newspaper.
The paper is then professionally printed and 2,000 copies are delivered to the school a few days after the programme is completed.
Magazine project
This is a high-level design project ideal for the qualifications where course work needs to be showcased.
Students spend 10 days working in the Press Association producing a glossy, 16-page A4 magazine that is professionally printed. They learn to use industry standard publishing software and have to create all the content. One thousand copies of the magazine are delivered to the school or college.
Web project
This project is ideal for students undertaking the Creative and Media Diploma. We have worked with Newham College in East London whose students gained vital work experience while developing their individual sections of the site.
They planned and staged a press conference with the people behind the qualification, chose the design and colour scheme of the site and spent their time in the Press Association crafting their content to showcase their work.
These are just three examples of the type of learning experience available. Contract us for more information.
I Read the News Today
Ever wondered what it is like to produce a TV news bulletin? This projects shows you.
Groups of up to 20 students from schools and colleges take part in a one-day project to try their hand at TV news production at our studio in East Yorkshire.
They play the part of journalists, presenters, camera operators, studio directors and floor managers in the build-up to putting together their own news bulletin aimed at fellow students.
It’s high pressure, fast-paced and all geared to making the experience as real as possible. When the studio light switches to the Red "On Air" sign, there’s no going back.
