Course Description

You probably do it every day without thinking.  And you probably don't give it much thought.  But clear, effective written communication is a skill that can make you stand out from the crowd.  It is one of the cornerstones of any successful business or organisation.  This course will radically change the way you write and make you a better communicator.  Although focusing on report writing, the course touches on all aspects of your daily written work, from emails to proposals and other documents.

Who Should Attend?

Executives, managers at all levels and administrative staff who are required to produce written work on a regular basis.

Course Outline

  • The principle and practice of good, clear writing
  • The four key building blocks of written communication: audience, purpose, structure and style
  • Why business people write the way they do - and why it doesn't work
  • Plain English - what it is and why it is important
  • Understanding your audience - what do they want?  How do you shape your communications for your audience?
  • Jargon and garbage - getting rid of meaningless phrases and saying what you mean
  • Typography - tricks of the trade to make your report more readable
  • How to structure your report
  • Style - what it is and how to shape it for your audience
  • How to use email properly - some tips on management and delivery

Business writing is a neglected skill and one that often slips through the training and development net.  This course is ideal if you want to refresh and update your writing skills and take time out to think more deeply about the way you communicate with colleagues, business partners and managers.

"I really enjoyed this course.  The trainer was engaging and clearly brought experience as a journalist and from other fields to this course."
