Press Association steps up Olympic coverage
With three years to go to the opening ceremony of London 2012, the Press Association has significantly increased its coverage of Olympic and Paralympic sports with a dedicated correspondent assigned to each discipline.
The team of correspondents will be overseen by Olympics Editor, Scott Dougal, who has been in place since May 2008. Olympics Correspondent, Helen William, completes the team; she has been in post for four years and covers the wider remit of the games including legacy, culture, transport and budgets.
Journalists will supply hundreds of stories a month across all sports ranging from athletics and badminton to swimming and sailing. They will report on the successes and failures of the big name Olympians, the progress of British sport's rising stars and breaking news from competitions around the world.
As part of the Press Association’s commitment to the Games, journalists will also be writing about the impact of hosting the Olympics on the country. We are already filing stories on the infrastructure, the legacy, youth and education and country-wide involvement.
To make full use of the extra coverage a separate Olympics news service is being planned giving customers access to the wealth of multimedia news, pictures and video that can be used on any platform.
Scott Dougal, Olympics Editor at the Press Association said: "Sports such as handball and archery will benefit greatly from having their own allotted journalist because it gives them a way of talking to the media and the rest of the country that they have not had before.
"The 2012 games are our home Olympics and as the national news agency of the United Kingdom these Olympics hold a special significance for us. We feel a great sense of responsibility and pride in being able to cover not only the Games in 2012 but also the great stories in the three years leading up to it."
Editor of the Press Association, Jonathan Grun said: "This is without doubt one of the biggest events we will ever cover and we relish the opportunity to tell the story of the Olympics in words, pictures and video.”
