Unbreakable world record for the highest game of cricket

If you were in London’s Trafalgar Square recently, you may have seen a cricket match taking place. It was a practice game for what could be the world’s highest fully competitive Twenty20 cricket match.

Today, the team start their journey to the Himalayas for a full Twenty20 Cricket match, which will take place at Gorak Shep on Everest at 5165 metres in about 9 days time. It will be a full scale match and due to the requirements for an official Twenty20 match the plateau where they intend to play is the highest that meets the official size. In theory, once this record is set, it will be unbreakable as there is no higher area that the game could officially be played.

Will Wintercross will be the only photographer accompanying the team to cover the record attempt, syndicating the record attempt exclusively through the Press Association:

“I’ll be trekking for 9 days to a height of 16,945 feet to Gorak Shep on Mt. Everest with the 50 strong team of Brits, Aussies and Kiwis. This is my ideal job, mixing my two passions – photography and mountaineering! I’ve been training for the past eight months and can’t wait to document the team’s effort. I’ll be shooting the trek up to the plateau and then the match itself. It will be an incredible setting and I’m just hoping for good weather!”

The two teams are made up of professionals, including bankers, chefs and a Met policeman, all of whom are based in London. The party of 50 includes 22 players, 8 reserves, 2 umpires (a Guinness Book of Records requirement) medics, groundsmen, umpires and supporters who will prepare a cricket tea complete with cucumber sandwiches.

They hope to raise £250,000 for the Lord’s Taverners, which helps young people play sport, and the Himalayas Trust. As well as photos of the match available here, fans can see the match beamed back to Lord’s and via the event website.
