Press Association Sport journalist Martyn Ziegler carries the Olympic torchBritish journalist to carry Olympic torch

Martyn Ziegler, Press Association Sport's chief reporter, is the only member of the British media to be invited to carry the Olympic torch for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The International Olympic Committee wanted to involve a member of the British media in the torch relay as London 2012 will be the next Games after Vancouver, and chose Martyn in recognition of his long experience reporting on the Olympic movement.

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will see Martyn take part in the February 9 leg from the Vancouver suburb of Surrey to Richmond, three days before the opening ceremony when the Olympic flame will be lit.

The physical demands should not be too tough as torchbearers need only be able to run 500 metres.

Martyn said: "This is a fantastic opportunity and I am really looking forward to it - how many people can say they have carried the Olympic torch?"

The Vancouver torch relay will start in Athens in October and begin its Canadian journey in Victoria before criss-crossing the country on a 106-day, 28,000-mile journey.
