Press Association Images has agreed a landmark deal to distribute user-generated photographs from award-winning citizen journalism service Demotix. The deal, which covers distribution rights in the UK and Ireland, marks the first time Press Association Images has worked with citizen photography.
Demotix brings together user-generated news photography from contributors all over the world and brokers it to media buyers. By working with Press Association Images, the photography arm of the UK’s national news agency, Demotix will increase the exposure of its members’ photographs in the UK market. Press Association Images, which is working to increase its portfolio of world photography, anticipates high demand for the fresh perspective offered by “street” photographers.
Martin Stephens, Managing Director, Press Association Images, commented:
“Press Association Images is delighted to be working with Demotix, who share our passion for delivering quality news photography. We pride ourselves on providing customers with the very best photography from around the world, using our own staff photographers and partners which include many major news organisations. We are excited to be working with user-generated photographs for the first time, and believe these images will not only add a unique and personal perspective to our 100 year old archive, but provide our customers with a new angle on world news.”
Turi Munthe, CEO, Demotix, commented:
“By working with Press Association Images extensive customer network, we tie our contributors ever more closely to the national news agenda, and of course open up a whole raft of clients for them.
Demotix- two years old this January - has a lot to learn from the PA. Together, we believe we can craft a new set of rules for sourcing and distribution, both in the UK and further afield."
