Dyfed-Powys Police have arrested a suspect as part of a sex assault probe at a playgroup

Playgroup sex investigation goes on

A toddlers' playgroup at the centre of a sex assault inquiry is to stay closed for at least 10 days.

St Padarn's Playgroup in Aberystwyth, west Wales, shut on Tuesday after police arrested a person on suspicion of sexual assault.

While the unnamed person was released on bail pending further inquiries the closure decision was to be reviewed on a daily basis.

Parents needing to make urgent alternative arrangements were referred to a Ceredigion Council information service website.

County social service staff were also made available to help and support families via a contact centre hotline.

Playgroup committee leaders have decided it will remain closed until at least February 22.

The news was issued in a brief announcement via the county's own website.

"Ceredigion County Council has been informed of the decision of the Saint Padarn Playgroup Committee, Aberystwyth, not to reopen the playgroup until 22 February 2010 at the earliest," it reads.

"It is understood that the Saint Padarn Playgroup Committee will continue to keep the matter under review and, as soon as it becomes aware of any change, Ceredigion County Council will report any further news on this page."

News of an arrest connected to a suspected sex assault at the playgroup was greeted with a mixture of shock and horror. Ceredigion Council leader Keith Evans described the situation as something "you hope never happens in your community".
